SPAMAST Wins Anew
SPAMAST once again won 1st Place in the national and international arena but this time in the area of extension. Not long ago, Dr. Augie E. Fuentes, RDE Director, bagged the top prize in the National Symposium on Agriculture and Aquatic Resources Research and Development (NSAARRD) last July 28, 2016. And now, Engr. Mark Jude F. Trondillo, Institute of Computing and Engineering Technology (ICET) Dean, also succeeded and brought home the 1st place in Best Paper Oral Presentation Categoryin the PAEPI’S 5th Biennial Convention and 1st International Conference on Extension held last October 26-28, 2016 hosted by the University of San Carlos, Cebu City.
Engr. Trondillo bested 12 other entries in the research category with thematic: Engineering, Innovation and Smartmatic Technology Category. Other thematic areas include: Food Production and Security, Health and Nutrition, Environmental Concerns, Education and Culture, and Socio-Economics. The entries were extension programs related to engineering, information technology and inventions for the utilization of the target clients. During the presentation, Engr. Trondillo focused on the relevant trainings conducted to beneficiaries and academic institutions, establishment of marketing linkages, as well as identification of socio-economic issues.
The winnable paper was entitled “GIS for Upscaling the Seaweed Industry Operation in Davao Region and Tawi-tawi Province”. This same paper also won Third Place Best Paper in the Research category during SMAARRDEC’s 29th Regional Symposium on Research and Development Highlights (RSRDH) held last August 22, 2016. It was co-authored by Dr. Irvin C. Generalao, Dr. Della Grace G. Bacaltos, Dr. Augie E. Fuentes, and Dr. Siverlyn M. Camposano.
The paper was part of the project “Seaweed Area GIS-Based Mapping as Production Support System for Sustainable Seaweeds Farming in the Philippines.” It was a national project in collaboration with Xavier University-The Ateneo de Cagayan and Mindanao State University (MSU)- Naawan. The project had a total budget of Php 3.6M funded by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development - Department of Science and Technology (PCAARRD-DOST).( Cherry Ann P.
