      SPAMAST President, Dr. Irvin C. Generalao, was the only Filipino Agricultural Engineer who was awarded with the status of ASEAN Engineer by the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organizations (AFEO) governing board in the 35th Conference of the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organizations (CAFEO) at Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, Bangkok, Thailand on November 16-18, 2017. Among the numerous applications received by PTC forwarded to AFEO, Dr. Generalao garnered the title as he was able to satisfy the requirements needed by the AFEO board. Dr. Generalao’s professional experiences and continuing professional development tossed him deserving to qualify. He was a member of the Philippine Technological Council (PTC) and the Philippine Society of Agricultural Engineers (PSAE), and through PTC President Engr. Federico A. Monsada, he was endorsed to qualify for the title as ASEAN Engineer. CAFEO was held yearly with one of the member organizations of which the rotation was done in alphabetical order. The said event aimed to gather all ASEAN Engineers to promote goodwill and mutual understanding among members, and to establish and develop an ASEAN baseline standard for the engineering profession with the objective of facilitating the mobility of engineers within the ASEAN countries. Prior to the said recognition, Dr. Generalao was recently awarded during the 67th Philippine Society of Agricultural Engineers Annual National convention at Legazpi City Convention Center, Albay last April 27, 2017 of his invaluable contribution in the advancement of the agricultural engineering profession through, among other things, for the display of professional competence and services rendered as President of SPAMAST while performing his job as a professional agricultural engineer. Dr. Generalao worked as a project leader and local expert in identifying suitable sites for small scale irrigation projects in the Davao Region through GIS Based Water Resource Management under the Sustaining Suitable Irrigation Project in Kiblawan, Davao del Sur; a consultant of Euro-hydro Consultancy Group on feasibility study of Micro Hydropower Development in Mindanao; consultant of Water Supply System in Region XI to name a few of the projects he acted as consultant. Dr. Generalao was once designated as Vice President for Research and Development at the University of Southeastern Philippines. He performed the duties including planning and evaluating projects, working in a laboratory conducting tests and working out in the field. In 2010, he was elected as the 4th President of Southern Philippines Agri-Business and Marine and Aquatic School of Technology, which opened doors for him to share his expertise among faculty members. He led them into doing researches of which as a result, personnel are now accustomed to research. There were extension activities that the President started such as helping the farmers determine the source of quality water for their banana plantation and farm and helping the toddy tappers within the community to produce quality coconut juices and vinegar sold to Lao Farm (a known exporter of coconut sugar in the United States). Despite the President’s hectic schedule, Dr. Generalao never abandoned his role as an educator. In fact, he was highly involved in conducting review classes for the agricultural engineering students. Dr. Generalao shared that his accomplishments over time made him land to such success. “There is no substitute for hard work in the name of public service,” he said. AFEO is composed of nine members engineering institutions and organizations of the ASEAN countries comprising Persatuan Insinyur Indonesia (PII), the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM), the Institution of Engineers Singapore (IES), the Engineering Institution of Thailand (EIT), Pertubuhan Ukur, Jurutera dan Arkitek (PUJA) Brunei, Vietnam Union of Science and Technological Associations (VUSTA), Myanmar Engineering Society, and the Engineering Institution of Cambodia. – Ma.
